Lynch, made my last short call on Dr. Scranton. A rainy rainy - evening but not one to stay at home - so away we went, all three, Mother to Mrs. Montgomery & Claude & I to see Nat Goodwin in "The Gilded Fool". A pretty good audience - the Cooks & Boardman Smith in a box - and a late curtain, preceded by the an- nouncement (by "Mr. Ingersoll" that the Company's costumes & scenery had not arrived & the first Act must be played in "ordinary street dress" &c. It was a disallusion, certainly. Even the complexions had not arrived & Wall St. millionaires appeared in old brown shoes the worse for wear & threadbare coats. "Buttons" had on a sweater & even the gilded Fool had no "bawth robe". We renewed our acquaintance with all in the 2nd act & The "Rev." & "Nell" were the least changed of any
